Daisy Nam

Daisy Nam is a curator at Ballroom Marfa in Texas. Previously, she held posts as assistant director at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University from 2015–19 and at the School of the Arts, Columbia University 2008–15. Her areas of focus and research include feminist practices across mediums of performance, film/video, sculpture and installation. She holds a master’s degree in Curatorial and Critical Studies from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in Art History and Cinema Studies from New York University.

Daisy’s residency occured January 15-25, 2020.

During the residency, I took the time to create a framework for a future online publishing project, as well as write about Asian and Asian-Americans artists and artworkers’ complex and shifting subject positions in the contemporary artworld(s). The publishing project, Minority Report, is a playful take on a report–a much dreaded school assignment–that is part journal, part reader, and part resource. This project stems from a year-long reading group with artists, curators, critics, and art workers around the idea of “Model Minority and Model Majorities” hosted by Asia Art Archive in America. The desire is to generate new conversations through ongoing collaborative thinking and learning by: conducting interviews with artists, curators, art workers working within a contemporary Asian art context in America and globally; compiling essays, digital works of art, and literature (poetry, fiction, non-fiction writing); and creating an ongoing list of keywords that are perhaps common yet contested. The hope is that through this project, conversations grow and change along with the ever shifting art discourses. –-Daisy Nam
